![]() ![]() The battles themselves are beyond spectacular, both in the long shots filled with marvelously convincing computer-generated armies and in the ferocious hand-to-hand combat. Soon, a second fire appears on the next peak, then on the next, and so on - until all of Middle-earth is aglow with clarion lights. There are images of breathtaking imagination and beauty in "Return." To alert Middle-earth to the imminent final battle, Pippin scales the tallest peak in Gondor and starts a bonfire. We also encounter the four-tusked mumakil, and the wide-bodied trolls who push the battering rams against the gates of Minis Tirith where the forces of Aragorn and Gandalf await.Īnd then there is Shelob, a spider the size of a Black Hawk helicopter, who anesthetizes the reckless Frodo with his bite and seals him in a silk cocoon, calling Sam - once again - to the rescue. Treebeard (voiced by Rhys-Davies) is back, standing guard over ravaged Isengard, and the flying dragons of "Two Towers" return to the aid of the orcs in the great war. It's only fair that Serkis, the lean British actor who created the movements and voice of the computer-animated Gollum, should make an appearance in his own body, and the back-story sequence enhances what has emerged as the trilogy's most popular character.īad as the little bipolar devil is, you cannot take your eyes off Gollum, and if there is any justice, one of the dozen or so Oscars "The Return of the King" deserves will go to Serkis.īut Gollum isn't the only amazing creation. ![]()
